Artist(s) / Organization(s): ECOLE NATIONALE SUPERIEURE D'A
Media(s): Installation
Date: 2008-3-12
Venue(s): Chuanbei Park
Description:
The project is collectively curated by design studio of Ecole Nationale Superieure D'Architecture de Paris-Belleville. They intend to transform a park into a scene in which the actors will be the inhabitants of Shanghai.
During the day, people are free to draw or write anything they want on large tissue bands. The artist group will provide the necessary tools (brushes, ink and paint) and will also encourage them to accomplish their graphic creation; without directly interfering in their artwork.
Then, at the end of the afternoon, when sun begins to go down, the artwork created during daytime will be exposed. The tissue bands will be hung, forming then different spaces, illuminated by Chinese lanterns. During the day the action is horizontal and during the night it will be vertical. Thanks to these vertical panels and to the lights, the artists will create new urban paths that will modify the habitual choreography of passers-by.
The main idea is to involve all the people in Shanghai in the urban intervention because the artists believe they are the main piece (bodies and choreography) of the urban space. The artists want them to be the actors and then the audience of their own performance.
The artists want to put in relief people's role in the urban system: the fact that people are the main piece of their environment; because a road is nothing without their steps, because Shanghai is nothing without their thoughts, their movements and their urban experiences.
