Description: The performance is a living sculpture in public space consisting of 6 teenage girls, who in a sequence of about 15 minutes use the drums for about 1 minute thus creating a sound like thunder in one of the busiest areas in Shanghai, Zhong Shan Park. As if it could be a clock or mechanical machine the sounds and actions in repetition create a presence that gives space for associations of political power to a huge children's toy as well as protest culture or a modern ritual. A short intermission for people to reflect on: what could be a new order??? The original idea and visual features are based on a scene and protagonist of "die Blechtrommel" (a novel by German writer Guenther Grass which is an important aspect of German cultural identity since the 50s) an adolescent who struggling with growing up is obsessed with the idea that playing his drums angrily will prevent him from becoming an adult. How do the dynamics of change in Shanghai affect growing up? Susanne M. Winterling is a Berlin based artist, her recent projects include 2008 Berlin Biennale, Basel Art Statements, Silverman Gallery in San Francisco and Parrotta Contemporary Art in Stuttgart. This is second performance project the artist realizes in Shanghai working with high school girls, exploring adolescent identity of girls and notion of belonging and individuality. |
